The settlement area of the Mon-people surrounds the eastern golf of Martaban and reaches from the mouth of the Sittang to the northern end of the range of hills of Tanithayi. Once these people, who later became cultural examples for extensive areas of Southeast Asia, settled in lower Burma up to Cambodia, and hereby absorbed the civilizations of the Thais and the Burmese. This created, in a period of 1500 years, a highly civilised society, whose roots lie hidden until to today.

However, historically proven is the fact that the surrounding tribes view and respect the Mon people as the „people of the golden land“ and that they are even jealous of their civilization and their wealth. This Suvannabhumi (golden land) was a region and influencing area of Buddhism from Burma (today Myanmar) up to Thailand and Cambodia. Without a doubt, the Mon people have lost their political power, but they deserve the crown for their civilization.
